Four years after the premiere of the third pirate Pirates of the Caribbean movie “At World's End”, Walt Disney Studios finished their work on the new movie called Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. However, while the original trilogy featured steady cast of characters that reprised their roles in every movie, On Stranger Tides moved away from several of them and placed full focus of the franchise on Johnny Depp in his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow. While Geoffrey Rush returned as Captain Hector Barbossa, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley did not reprise their roles as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann respectively.
In this movie Captain Jack Sparrow goes on a grand adventure to find the fabled Fountain of Youth so that he could prevent dark prophecy casted on him, but he immediately becomes entangled in the confrontation with highly fictionalized version of the famous historical pirate Edward “Blackbeard” Teach, here played by famous actor Ian McShane. Lured by the presence of his former lover Angelica, Captain Jack Sparrow joins Blackbeard who also gained help from Barbossa, now privateer in the army of British crown. Antagonists of this film were Spanish crown, who employed their naval fleets to both find the Fountain of Youth, but also destroy all pirates in their way.
Even though “On Stranger Tides“ received worst critical reception of all Pirates of the Caribbean movies, citing complicated and disjointed storytelling as most important offenders, audiences reacted favorably even after removal of Knightley and Bloom from the cast, enabling box office earnings to go to slightly over 1 billion dollars. Walt Disney Pictures announced that they will produce another trilogy set after the events of the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
